So many of us dream of being successful in whatever we have planned for our future. We map it out. We write it down. We can’t wait to show everybody that we are not failures! We don’t have to work this stupid going nowhere job anymore! We don’t have to put up with the boss’s shit. We will finally live like kings!
And then…crickets. How easy it is for us to get derailed. One little set-back and it all falls apart. It’s too hard. I don’t have time. Maybe everyone was right…I can’t do it. It was a dumb idea anyway.
I call BULLSHIT! Like it wasn’t tough before you even began? How great is it now for you? Have you forgotten whose life you are living?
Success is what we make of it. When WE feel successful, life is good. Money isn’t always success. Accomplishing something you set out to do, is success. No matter what that may be. Here is what I’ve learned about successful people. People that are driven, and will not quit, until they finish what they started.
Successful people do not accept what they are told. Tell someone with a fire in their belly and stars in their eyes, that they can’t do something. I dare you. There are people in this world, that depend on their own discipline to get things done. They do their own research, because they do not entirely believe what you are telling them can or cannot be done. These kinds of people aren’t necessarily just out to prove everybody wrong all the time. That is a whole other subject. They just have a vision entirely different than what others may see. And they dig in, whole-heartily to back it up.
Another step driven people do, is they write down their goals. They write them down somewhere they will look at them every day. They constantly remind themselves what it is they wish to accomplish. The saying goes “A person with no plan… plans to fail”. It is so easy to get busy and caught up with daily routines, that you forget what it was you wanted to do. You forget how you felt when you first set out to get it done. You forget why you even wanted to do it in the first place. You put it on the back burner because everything else you “have to” do squeezes it out of the picture entirely. Write it down. Look at it every day. Speak it out loud every day. Do one little thing that involves it every day. One little victory. One little step closer. Do this every day.
Set goals. Set a timeline. I have found that if you give yourself an allotted amount of time for a chore, it usually takes that amount of time. Life has a way of filling up the space that we allow. If I said “I only have 20 minutes to get this blog typed, guess what? It would only take about 20 minutes. It’s just the way it is. I can’t explain it.
Another attribute is to have a mission. What is your mission. Why do you want to accomplish your goal? Your mission should be true to you. Your authentic self. Everyone has their own reasons for doing something. What is yours? Speak it into existence.
Rewrite your own story. Create your own legacy. What are people going to remember about you after you reach your goal. Share your story. Help others get there too. Successful people are always willing to share their knowledge. They know what it feels like to be where you are now. They’ve been there. The apprehension. The anxiety. The fear of failure. But they started anyway. They took the first step and kept going. If you don’t make a change, nothing is going to change. It all starts with a decision. And you are the only one that can make it.
And lastly, a successful person is always the hardest working person in the room. They show up for work on time. They do their job and then some. They are helpful, and respectful of other employees. They act like employee of the month every damn day. I don’t care what kind of job you have to do until you get to do the thing you want to do. You make sure you do it well. Don’t just show up. Don’t give it the “I don’t get paid to do that” attitude. Or how about the “I don’t get paid enough to give a shit about anyone else”. These attitudes are the very reason you are miserable. You can’t see past your own needs. Imagine a world where everyone just looked out for themselves. What kind of world would that be? How are you going to be a leader one day, or excel at anything if you don’t give a shit about anybody else? Remember, you are paying attention to everything you do and say during your day. How you perceive is what you become. So, take pride in whatever you do, and do it well. People aren’t going to remember your words They are going to remember your actions. How you handled yourself during times of crisis. How you overcame obstacles, and never gave up. How you showed up and always gave 100%.
These are just some examples of how your attitude can play a huge role in acquiring your goals in life. You need to create a plan.
- Have a vision.
- Know what you want to happen in the future.
- Anchor your plan with action. How are you doing to make it happen?
- Review. Adapt. Adjust. Do whatever you have to do to fit it in and make time for it. Just a little bit every day.
We are all busy. But you make time for the things, and the people you love. Fall in love with your dream. Give it the attention it craves. Handle it with care. Speak kindly of it. Believe in it. You’ll get there one day.
