Happy Day Three of 2022. How’s it going? Are you practicing what you promised yourself you would do at the start of the new year? Or do you deem it impossible already, and are ready to ditch the effort?
I might also ask if the resolution at hand was for yourself, or did you jump on the “everyone else is doing it” train? Promises made to yourself are a very serious commitment. But your mind, if not already acclimated with the act you plan to proceed with, will fight against it tooth and nail. If what you plan to do is too foreign to your nature, your mind sees it as a threat, and will do everything it can to ward off your “DIY.” If up until now, you have been eating take-out and drinking a Big Gulp every day, and then wake up one day forcing yourself to eating salads and juicing, you are in for a surprise. If it isn’t routine, your body will notice. Your mind will procrastinate and make excuses for you to quit as soon as you start. You need to make it a habit. And habits take a longer time to form than you may realize. You don’t just fall into a routine after just 2 or 3 days. It can as long as 1-2 months.
This is why so many of us quit something before we even give it a fair chance. Your mind is so ready to comfortably fall back to your same old routine that it has become familiar with. Your body does not like surprises.
And it’s not just dieting. Being kind to yourself and putting yourself first is just as hard, if not worse. Years and years we have been telling ourselves that we aren’t good enough, or that we will never be happy and get the life we’ve always dreamed of. Many of us have been listening to the brainwashing since childhood. People telling us over and over, with their squinty eyes, and growling mouths, that we will never succeed at life. That we are just like the rest of the family and will never amount to anything. So why bother? Stop listening! You are adults now. You have the power to turn and walk away. I am here to tell you that you are not “like the rest” of them. That is a cop-out they lie to us about, so we dare not hope to do something with our lives. They want us to be JUST LIKE THEM. “NORMAL” people want their loved ones to succeed and be happy. ABNORMAL people want to preach failure and disaster until we are too paralyzed with fear to step out of the vicious circle they themselves have been living in and wish for us to remain.
If you fail just days into your promises, don’t give up! You have to keep starting over. But only if it’s something that you really want to do. Did you ever stop to think that the reason you don’t have passion and vigor for whatever it is, is because you just aren’t feeling it. It’s just not YOUR style. And that’s ok! You don’t need to do what everyone else is trying to do with their lives. You do what you decide is best for you! And you go the pace that you set for yourself to do it. Quit trying to keep up with the Jone’s. Quit trying to be the bigshot. Quit putting yourself out there for people that really don’t give a shit about you. Do it for you!
